Just Half An Hour

If you read yesterday’s post then you’ll know this already… I’m a pharmacist! 🙂

I don’t know what, if any, images that conjures up in your mind but there are all kinds of pharmacists and jobs that pharmacists do and I’ve been fortunate enough to have worked in some of the more unique practice settings out there.

Most people have had some type of interaction with community and retail pharmacists… These are the ladies and gentlemen you might see at your local pharmacy when you go to pick up a medication.

There are also hospital pharmacists… These are the ones who are responsible for providing medications to patients that are admitted in hospitals.

I’ve done both of these, but I’ve spent more of my career doing other types of pharmacy including:

• Pharmacy IT – building software for pharmacies to improve the efficiency of pharmacists and protect patients better (by decreasing medication and filling/dispensing errors)
• Home Infusion – providing IV medications to patients in their homes when keeping them in a hospital bed was not 100% necessary and they didn’t need “hospital-level” care
• Drug Information – if you’ve ever called your local pharmacy to ask a medical/pharmacy question, you were likely routed (without your knowledge probably) to a call center where pharmacists like me sat at the ready to respond to your questions 🙂
• Regulatory Affairs – someone has to make sure that pharmacists are doing the right thing and not doing things they shouldn’t be doing… That’s what I got to do in this role (although, this is really a major over-simplification of what was involved)

I mentioned yesterday that I just got a new job… And it’s in yet a new type of pharmacy practice setting (at least, one that is new to me).

I’ll be working in managed care and pharmacy benefits.

Since it’s brand new to me, I am looking forward to the journey ahead. Not just learning something new, but also to the opportunity to add this new feather to my cap.

You can probably tell that I am an advocate of trying new things and expanding one’s skill set. I try not to stay in one place for too long (when it comes to jobs, that is), to the point that I become useless elsewhere.

There’s a school of thought that believes that “job-hopping” is detrimental to one’s career…

I am not of that school of thought.

I think being flexible and able to demonstrate the ability to learn new skills and adapt easily to changes is a positive thing and something that employers are likely to appreciate. 🙂

In Other News…

I have an iPhone and Apple recently updated their iOS again.

Usually these updates are benign but not this time around… They made a change to FaceTime that for the life of me, I cannot begin to imagine what the thinking behind it was.

Prior to this update, if you wanted to flip your camera around during a FaceTime call, it was as easy as pressing a button on the screen.

But now…

You have to go through about 6 steps, including an annoying lag time and screen-block, just to simply flip your camera around!

Why in the world the folks at Apple would think that making it more cumbersome to flip the camera around was a good idea is beyond me. Dare I call this an “upgrade’…?

No… No I don’t…

I know there are other things they added to FaceTime that weren’t there before, like group calls and whatnots, but still… I don’t think losing the simplicity of flipping the camera around was worth the additional features gained.

And that’s the end of my rant 🙂
